If tomorrow you find out your shi*ty colleague has cancer, would you treat him better?
But do you really need to know that someone has cancer, to treat them better?
Life is not easy and the world is going crazy, I think that’s one thing we all could agree on. Traffic is bad going to work, pollution is a big problem, an unwanted family gathering is coming up, your job is stressful, and some of your colleagues make you want to punch them in the face? (or go cry in the restroom)
Yes, those are legit and you have all the right to be frustrated or mad.
But everyone is going through the same thing, in the same exact world as you.
That stupid colleague of yours that has been driving you crazy all months, might just found that he has cancer and he’s so angry he doesn’t know what to do.
The waitress that acted like she didn’t care for your late lunch, could have found out that her son is in trouble at school and she cannot get off work to help him.
Your taxi driver who drove like he wanted to kill everyone in the car, may just lost someone he loves.
If you had known all these things before you meet all of these people who act like sh*t, would you have been more kind to them?
I woke up super grumpy today. I don’t know why. I don’t know how to fix it. My husband was there and he was the only one I can burst on. Though he was super sweet to me all morning, it stills felt like there was a hot-lava bubbling inside me ready to explode.
10 minutes later, he dropped an ice trey and broke it (unintentionally I hope), he just looked so sad that my internal hot-lava stopped bubbling.
I went to give him a hug and asked if he was okay, and I got an unexpected answer. He said,
Everything is going against me, ice trey and then you. You are nice now only because you feel bad about me breaking the ice trey.
I realized that’s true and it’s anything but fair.
I know I’m capable of being nice to him, without a broken ice trey. I sure know that he deserves all the love and kindness without a broken ice trey as well.
This morning makes me wonder
Do we really need to know everyone's sad story to be able to have empathy?
I’d like to believe that we don’t.
Why can’t we all just be kind to each other just because we are all human fellows?
Every day, every single person that you encounter has a story. No one is born with a life goal to make your life miserable. Everyone wants to be happy, to be loved, and to be taken care of, but that’s not the case all the time.
When life throws you a hard curveball, the last thing you need is to feel like everything is going against you.
Most of the time when you are unhappy or mad about something, it’s really hard to have the bandwidth to handle unfavorable emotions in a nice way. You might just smile less, act a little bit weird, or just don’t care about anything else. Sounds familiar?
Let’s all be more kind to the people that we get in touch with.
Tip your taxi driver even if he acts a little absurd, it might help him treat the next passenger better.
Ask your colleague how has he been, maybe it will open a conversation that is much needed for both sides.
Smile a little wider to strangers, it could help them feel a little less depressed today.
And also try our best to not release our negative emotions on anyone, no one deserves it.
This is not the how-to make the world a better place kind of blogs, I can promise you I don’t know how.
But don’t you think the world would be a much nicer place if we can all be nice to each other regardless of any conditions? ;)
